Heal it right
How to look after your new tattoo, from the first night until it's healed.
First few hours
Leave the wrap on for the time Saul tells you. Wash your hands before you touch the tattoo.
Washing
Gently wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don't rub.
Moisturizing
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free aftercare ointment or lotion a few times a day. Thin is better than thick.
Peeling and itching
Light peeling and itching are normal. Don't pick or scratch. Let flakes fall off on their own.
Avoid for 2–3 weeks
Pools, the ocean, hot tubs, baths and direct sun. No tanning beds. Skip gardening and yard work, and keep pets and other animals off the area. Wear loose, clean clothing over it.
Long term
Once healed, use sunscreen on your tattoo to keep black and grey work crisp.
When to get help
Spreading redness, swelling or tenderness that gets worse, red streaks moving out from the tattoo, heat, pus-like drainage or a fever can mean infection. See a doctor right away.
